Before you book

  1. Compare widely. Prices for the same car and dates can vary a lot between companies and booking sites.
  2. Choose free cancellation so you can rebook if the price falls.
  3. Price an off-airport location. Airport fees can be a large share of the bill.
  4. Check the mileage terms. Most standard U.S. rentals include unlimited mileage, but not all, especially one-way trips and specialty vehicles.
  5. Don't over-size. You'll get the class you book "or similar". Economy and compact cars often get a free upgrade when the lot runs short.
  6. Use discounts: AAA, warehouse club travel programs, airline and hotel partners, and employer or association codes.

  • Read the final total on the agreement, and decline extras you did not ask for

  • Take another walk-around video, including the fuel gauge and odometer
  • Get a closed-out receipt before you leave, or check your email for it

Frequently asked questions

Should I prepay for fuel?

Only if you are sure you will return the tank close to empty and the prepaid price per gallon is competitive. Otherwise, refuel yourself before returning the car.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in the USA?

It depends on the company and the state. Many major companies rent to drivers 20 or 21 and up, with a young driver fee under 25. New York and Michigan require companies to rent to drivers 18 and older, usually with a surcharge.

Do I get unlimited mileage?

Most standard U.S. rentals include it, but check the terms, especially for one-way rentals, specialty vehicles and some local renters.
